Walnut Blasting for Direct-Injection Engines
Carbon buildup on the intake valves is common on many direct-injection European engines. Over time, these deposits can restrict airflow and affect engine performance.

Why Direct-Injection Engines Develop Carbon Buildup
In a traditional port-injected engine, fuel passes over the intake valves on its way into the combustion chamber, which helps keep the valve surfaces clean.
Direct-injection engines work differently. Fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber, so it doesn't wash over the backs of the intake valves. Oil vapor and other contaminants can collect on those surfaces and gradually form carbon deposits.
How quickly buildup develops varies depending on the engine, mileage, driving conditions, maintenance history, and other factors. There isn't a single mileage at which every direct-injection engine needs carbon cleaning.

How Walnut Blasting Removes Carbon Buildup
Walnut blasting is the method we use for intake valve carbon cleaning.
We remove the intake manifold and fuel injectors to access the intake valves. The valves are soaked with intake valve cleaner to help break down the accumulated deposits. Walnut shell media is then used to blast away the remaining carbon while the media and loosened deposits are vacuumed out at the same time.
The result is a thorough cleaning of the intake valves and ports.
Audi, Volkswagen & BMW Carbon Cleaning
We perform carbon cleaning on applicable direct-injection European engines. Common applications include:
- Audi and Volkswagen TFSI and TSI engines
- BMW N54 and N55 engines
- BMW B46/B48 and B58 engines

Our Carbon Cleaning Process
Our carbon cleaning process includes:
- Checking the vehicle for present faults and determining what may be contributing to the concern
- Removing the intake manifold and fuel injectors
- Visually inspecting the intake valves and carbon buildup
- Soaking the valves with intake valve cleaner to help break down deposits
- Walnut blasting the intake valves and ports while simultaneously vacuuming away the media and loosened carbon
- Installing new seals and gaskets during reassembly
- Reinstalling the intake manifold, injectors, and related components
- Clearing faults and test driving the vehicle after the service
Why We Recommend Replacing the Fuel Injectors
The fuel injectors have to be removed to perform the carbon cleaning, and carbon can also accumulate on the injector tips.
We often find that heavily carbon-covered injectors can cause problems after the intake valves have been cleaned. For that reason, we may recommend replacing the fuel injectors at the same time.
There is complete labor overlap for injector replacement because the injectors and intake manifold are already removed as part of the carbon cleaning. If injector replacement is recommended for your vehicle, we'll discuss it with you before performing any additional work.
